Background of the Study
Religious education has traditionally played a significant role in shaping ethical values and social responsibilities among students. In Maiduguri LGA, Borno State, religious education is integrated into the curriculum not only to nurture spiritual growth but also to encourage active community engagement through volunteer work. The teachings provided in religious classes emphasize altruism, compassion, and the importance of serving others, which are seen as foundational to developing a sense of civic duty (Ibrahim, 2023). Recent studies have suggested that exposure to religious education can positively influence students’ attitudes towards volunteerism, thereby increasing their willingness to participate in community service activities (Abubakar, 2024). In a region often challenged by socio-political and economic hardships, volunteer work is viewed as a vital mechanism for community development and social cohesion. Religious education, therefore, serves as a catalyst for instilling a volunteer spirit, encouraging students to contribute to society in meaningful ways. The curriculum in Maiduguri LGA has been designed to incorporate practical components such as community service projects and outreach programs, which complement theoretical teachings. This dual approach is intended to bridge the gap between belief and action, fostering a generation of socially responsible individuals. Furthermore, religious institutions and schools collaborate closely to reinforce the message of volunteerism, creating an environment where students are motivated to act on their moral convictions (Suleiman, 2025). The interplay between religious instruction and volunteer work highlights the potential of education to drive social change by cultivating ethical and service-oriented mindsets. This study, therefore, seeks to evaluate how effectively religious education influences students’ willingness to engage in volunteer work, examining factors such as curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and extracurricular engagement (Abubakar, 2024). Through a comprehensive analysis of these elements, the research aims to provide insights into the transformative power of religious education in promoting community service and social responsibility.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of religious education to promote volunteerism, limited empirical evidence exists regarding its actual impact on students’ willingness to engage in community service in Maiduguri LGA, Borno State. Although religious teachings advocate for altruism and social responsibility, many students appear reluctant to translate these values into action due to socio-economic challenges, cultural barriers, and inconsistencies in curriculum delivery (Abubakar, 2024). Furthermore, while schools integrate community service projects into their programs, the extent to which these initiatives foster a genuine volunteer spirit among students remains unclear. Inadequate teacher training, resource constraints, and external influences such as economic hardship further inhibit student participation in volunteer work (Suleiman, 2025). These gaps hinder the ability of educational policymakers to design targeted interventions that effectively leverage religious education to boost volunteerism. Consequently, a systematic evaluation of how religious education influences student attitudes towards volunteer work is needed. This study intends to fill that gap by exploring the integration of volunteerism within religious education curricula, examining the methods employed by educators, and assessing the resultant impact on student behavior. By doing so, the research will provide actionable recommendations to enhance the role of religious education in fostering community engagement and volunteerism, which is critical for social development and cohesion (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the impact of religious education on students’ attitudes toward volunteer work.
2. To determine the relationship between religious teachings and student engagement in community service.
3. To suggest measures to enhance the integration of volunteer work within religious education curricula.
Research Questions:
1. How does religious education influence students’ willingness to volunteer?
2. What challenges hinder the effective promotion of volunteerism through religious education?
3. What strategies can improve student participation in volunteer activities?
Research Hypotheses:
1. There is a positive relationship between religious education and student willingness to engage in volunteer work.
2. Inadequate integration of practical community service projects within religious education negatively affects volunteerism.
3. Enhanced curriculum design in religious education is associated with higher rates of student volunteerism.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the role of religious education in promoting volunteerism among students in Maiduguri LGA. The findings will offer insights for educators and policymakers to enhance curriculum design and foster a culture of community service. By identifying the factors that influence volunteer work, the research will contribute to efforts in social development and civic engagement. The study’s outcomes can guide interventions aimed at strengthening the connection between religious education and practical community service (Abubakar, 2024; Suleiman, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the assessment of religious education’s influence on volunteerism among students in Maiduguri LGA, Borno State, and focuses exclusively on this educational context.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Religious Education: Instruction aimed at imparting spiritual values and ethical principles based on religious teachings.
2. Volunteer Work: Unpaid activities undertaken to benefit the community.
